Remembering

image

a beautiful, simple idea

Josephine Gay liked riding her bike.
She loved the color purple.
Seeing her picture reading her life
I can’t help but think she was me at that age.
She died just three days after her birthday and
I remember when I turned seven,
threatened with a spanking for skating on the kitchen
in clean white stockings, in clean white dress.
I wonder how she celebrated,
if she made a mess of her cake
wore violet/lavender lace.
Perfect middle name Grace
her smile was a place most people I know
can’t reach can’t be such free-flowing silly
without taking a drink, smoking some type of green.
Beautiful girl–
now just a dream that ended
before anyone was ready to wake up.
